Paediatrics [ Kids ward / OPD / NICU / KMC]

Introduction:

The Paediatric department is one of the major departments in the Eastern Regional Hospital comprising of the OPD/triage and emergency, Kids ward and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The department provides 24hr service to all children below 12 years.

The aim of the department is to provide comprehensive and good quality in-patient health care services to children of the Eastern Region and beyond in a friendly atmosphere by motivated and competent staff in well maintained hospital infrastructure.

The current Head of Department is Dr. Diana Awintima Apanga.

Working hours: 24hr service every day

 

Services:

Emergency services: Paediatric medical and surgical emergency care.

Out-Patient consultation services on acute childhood illnesses.

 

 

Weekly Paediatric Special clinics held for children living with chronic childhood illnesses i.e.

  • Sickle cell clinic -Wednesdays
  • ART clinic - Wednesdays
  • Neurology clinic - Thursdays
  • Asthma clinic -Thursdays
  • Diabetes clinic - Thursdays
  • Cardiac clinic - Thursdays
  • Nephrology clinic - Thursdays
  • Child welfare clinic (immunization /growth monitoring services)
  • Nutritional assessment and rehabilitation services.
  • Health Education /Counselling Services on Paediatric conditions.
  • Preceptorship / mentoring and coaching of students undergoing training

Follow-up services with peripheral health facilities to improve referral system,

Home-visits of clients lost to follow-up.

  • Monthly refresher training sessions held for staff

  • Close monitoring of clinic attendance and follow-up of children living with diabetes in the unit; where concerns and some emergencies were managed through phone calls while at home.

Quality improvement projects in 2022
Successful completion of the year’s Point of Care Quality Improvement Project on Emergency Drug Replacement; currently at sustainability stage.

Development of standard treatment protocols on management of paediatric emergencies displayed in the unit for reference to eliminate clinical errors during emergencies.

What should i carry along when coming to the hospital?

Patients are adviced to come with their hospital card and thier health insurance card.
Patienst with private insurance must also come along with their card

Where to visit when you first attend the hospital?

Patients should first visit the OPD (Adults OPD for adult and Kids OPD for kids) to be given service. Doctors cannot consult without visiting the medical records for service

Where and who do i make payment to for any uncovered bills?

Any additional health bills (service and drugs) that are not fully are partially covered under an insurance should be paid at the mini banks provided around the hospital with a receipt in return. Under no circumstances should payment be made to a health staff.
